The Long and Short of it
WHAT IS EAT ALLERGY SAFE?
Eat Allergy Safe is a resource run by me, Nina Modak, to teach you how to use allergies to empower and instill confidence in your children.
– But how can we do this?
Much of the information about allergies focuses on the problems and fear. I believe allergies are only one part of life, it’s how you think about it that will change your life. If you are new to the world of allergies, you can find out more on my Getting Started page.
Who Is Nina Modak?
AND HOW DOES SHE KNOW ABOUT THIS STUFF?
I’m a food loving girl in my mid-twenties who was diagnosed with anaphylaxis to tree and ground nuts as a toddler. Like many other allergy sufferers and their parents, my family and I learned through trial and error.
Anaphylaxis means that I have a life threatening allergy. Even the smallest amount of peanut or tree nut, could lead to my death. Since I could remember I have carried two epinephrine adrenaline auto-injector pens, anti-histamines and inhalers. I was also born with eczema and suffer from asthma.
While I was at university, I discovered that gluten really didn’t agree with me. Having a nut allergy and a gluten intolerance really made eating a challenge.
THIS COULD HAVE BEEN TERRIBLE BUT FOR….
The support my parents gave me as a little person.
I was a happy, well behaved child who liked school. When I started primary school my parents prepared me for looking after my allergy: knowing how to use my medical kit (EpiPens, anti-histimes, inhalers, nebuliser), what symptoms to look out for, knowing what could contain nuts. The school also went completely nut free. But what my parents made sure I knew has stayed with me. They said “if you are unsure of any food, don’t eat it. Even if an adult is telling you to, you say no. Don’t worry about getting in trouble because you won’t. You tell us and we will deal with it.”
How Eat Allergy Safe Began
A LITTLE ORIGIN STORY ABOUT A BIG DREAM
The real power of these words were that I felt empowered. My parents had given me permission to take charge of my well being. This meant, as a little person, I could take ownership of my allergy and my life with a safety net: knowing my parents were always there to support me.
As I’ve grown older, this understanding has matured and adapted as I grew. I wanted to share the techniques I have learned from my parents, as an adult, from other parents and allergy sufferers in similar situations.
When I officially started Eat Allergy Safe in 2015, my goal was simple: show that allergies are only one part of life, not the whole of it. Since that time it has become increasingly easy to find allergy friendly recipes, products and practical allergy management methods – but what seems harder to find is how we can use a allergies as a positive tool to empower and instill confidence, maturity and self-awareness.
THIS IS WHERE EAT ALLERGY SAFE FITS IN.
Life threatening allergies can bring you face to face with mortality. Dealing with this, especially in the case of your children, can be really tough. But that’s why you have no choice but to harness your inner strength so that you can forge the path for your children.
In my lifetime I have learned to take charge of my well being, my environment, to manage my allergy and not stop it from inhibiting my exploration of the world. This confidence was kindled by my parents and their approach to my allergy management.
I want you to use my experiences and the experiences of other allergy parents, the good and the bad, to empower your children to grow in confidence and self-awareness. You are going to teach them to grow and explore the world knowing they have the tools necessary to do more than just survive it!
Why I Do What I Do
HINT: IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY OR THE FAME
I believe allergies are not about ‘missing out’. They just mean you have to change the rules of the game. They force you to go against the herd, and that’s not a bad thing!
Why not use it to your advantage?! I want to show you life is possible and it is SO exciting!
